Michelle Obama Is Totally Obsessed with Being a Capricorn

NEED TO KNOW

  • Born on January 17, Michelle Obama is one of the most famous Capricorns
  • A recent episode of the IMO podcast she hosts with her brother Craig Robinson showed me just how obsessed she is with being a Capricorn
  • IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson releases new episodes every Wednesday

They’re hardworking, tenacious, super-organized and if you ask them, Capricorns will tell you they make our world go round. And one of the world’s most notable Capricorns proudly represents her sun sign whenever she gets the chance.

I first started listening to Michelle Obama and her brother Craig Robinson’s podcast IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson when clips of their interview with Tracee Ellis Ross began going viral. The clip in question — in which Ross spoke about the grief she feels about never having started a family of her own — intrigued me enough that I wanted to listen to more.

I then listened to their episode with Damon and Marlon Wayans, as well as Seth Rogen and his wife Lauren Miller, before I landed on what might be my favorite episode to date, featuring Issa Rae.

The topic of that particular episode was about friendships and how they change as one becomes successful and especially how they also differ between men and women. And while I’m totally here for the sage advice, I got a kick out of seeing just how dialed in Mrs. Obama was about being a Capricorn.

The topic first came up when Obama asked Rae — who recently opened her restaurant, Somerville —how she got into the restaurant business. The Insecure creator then revealed that the idea of being in the food business had been a childhood dream and that she used to take on the role of “the bossy restaurant owner” when she played house with her brother when they were kids.

As she began explaining how one 30-something birthday nudged her into opening what is now Somerville, Obama then chimed in saying, “You’re Capricorn [too]?,” as she did a little happy dance in her chair. “Like me. [January] 17th over here.”

“That’s why we bossy,” she joked.

Later in the same episode, the trio discussed how Robinson kept the news of his impending divorce from his first wife quiet until it was actually happening. Obama recalled feeling slighted to not have been involved earlier, and Rae asked Robinson why he decided to proceed that way — though apologized if she was getting too into his business.

“No, we are getting into your business,” Obama teased. “Two Capricorns. We in your business,” she said, laughing.

Her big brother then explained that the reason he opted to keep his marital difficulties to himself back then was because he thought he would be able to salvage the marriage. Letting everyone in, he thought, would cause future problems had they been able to reconcile.

“The reason I didn’t tell her was because I was hoping that it would work out,” he explained. “Because if [the divorce] didn’t work out and I got over it, she would never get over it. I was trying to save everybody’s relationship.”

Later in the episode, she explains how her role as First Lady made her more deliberate in her friendships because she wanted them to know she would be available to them in a crisis. Being excluded from hard conversations with well-meaning friends who hoped to spare her from their drama, she and Rae agreed, would have upset her.

“Now you see, she would have been mad when she said she wouldn’t have,” Robinson objected.

“It wouldn’t have lasted,” Obama retorted. “Capricorns, we get mad but we don’t stay mad.”

The earth sign would come up once more when she spoke about how Capricorns speak with a bit more candor when it comes to “being honest about who we are [and] what we want.”

While IMO is every bit about advising listeners on everything from parenting, leadership, community building and passing on the wisdom she and Robinson have collected in their lives, hearing Michelle Obama be so excited and geeked out about astrology made me feel like we have a common thread. The fact that she even knows what characteristics are attributed to Capricorns has me convinced she, like me, has delved into her Big Three (IYKYK) and will totally judge you based on your zodiac sign.

I may never get into Harvard or Princeton and certainly if any partner of mine ever dared run for president, I’d be so out of that relationship (I’m a Scorpio, we prefer living in the shadows) — but hearing her be so enthusiastic about astrology made me feel like I have something in common with this public figure I’ve admired since I was a little girl.

The zodiac girlies are winning!
