Get ready to go back to Berk for more dragon drama.

How to Train Your Dragon is one of the most popular and beloved animated franchises of the 21st century, spawning a film trilogy, various television series, video games and even a theme park.

The original movie was released in 2010, and the characters of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III and his loyal dragon friend, Toothless, are about to be introduced to the next generation in the new live-action remake, which premiered in theaters on June 13.

Inspired by the best-selling book series by Cressida Cowell, each installment in the original trilogy was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. Now, 15 years since the first film’s release, the live-action remake will feature stunning visual effects, and even more emotional complexity to the characters and the classic story.

Dean DeBlois, who directed the animated How to Train Your Dragon movies, and returns to helm the remake, told The Wrap that he hopes the 2025 version, “echoes to the familiarity and the nostalgia of the first movie, but with depth.”

“There are many ways we could have gone, but that’s the way that felt most comfortable to me, because I am really proud of that animated movie,” he added.

How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

Set on the isle of Berk, How to Train Your Dragon tells the story of Hiccup, a teen Viking who manages to shoot down a Night Fury, a dangerous dragon who has been attacking the Viking village.

When no one believes that Hiccup shot down the creature, he ventures into the forest to find it. There, he discovers the dragon, befriending and training him. Hiccup also names him Toothless because of his retractable teeth.

Learning from Toothless, Hiccup begins to excel in his dragon training courses. At the same time, Toothless takes Hiccup and his friend Astrid for a ride into the dragons’ lair, where they discover the real reason why the dragons have been attacking the village.

Based on Cowell’s 2003 children’s book, How to Train Your Dragon was released in March 2010. It was a box office hit, eventually grossing close to $500 million worldwide, per NBCUniversal. The following year, it was nominated for two Academy Awards, Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score.

Dreamworks Dragons (2012-2018)

The animated series Dreamworks Dragons picks up where How to Train Your Dragon left off, with the Vikings and dragons learning to work together to battle new foes and discover even more dragons in the surrounding lands.

Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and T.J. Miller were among the actors who returned to reprise their roles from the first film.

Dreamworks Dragons premiered in 2012 with the first season called called Dragons: Riders of Berk and the second season titled Dragons: Defenders of Berk. Starting in the third season, the series moved to Netflix and was known as Dragons: Race to the Edge for the rest of its run, through season 8.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014)

Set five years after the events of the first film, How to Train Your Dragons 2 shows the Vikings of Berk and the dragons who once terrorized them now living in harmony. Notably, Hiccup’s father, Stoick the Vast, wants Hiccup to succeed him as the Viking leader, but Hiccup is unsure.

While on one of their missions, Hiccup and Astrid encounter a group of dragon trappers and learn of Drago Bludvist, a cruel warlord creating a dragon army to rule the world with.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 dials the dragon drama to the next level, with multiple dragon armies fighting one another, and the introduction of giant creatures known as Bewilderbeasts. Hiccup also learns that his ability to help dragons runs in his family when he reunites with someone he long thought dead.

Like the first one, How to Train Your Dragon 2 was a commercial success, and it was also nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019)

The third animated feature, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, debuted in theaters in 2019, five years after the previous installment.

The story of Hiccup and Toothless continues, with Hiccup now chieftain of Berk. He leads dragon-riders as they rescue imprisoned dragons, bringing them back to the Viking village, but the island has become overcrowded with both humans and their merry monsters.

Hiccup longs for a safe home for his flying friends and remembers the “Hidden World” his father, Stoick, spoke about, where dragons can live safely.

The eventual discovery of the mythical place not only leads to new dangers for the dragons and the humans of Berk, but also a new love interest for Toothless, who falls head over claws for a loving white Light Fury.

Dragons: Rescue Riders (2019-2022)

Set in the world of How to Train Your Dragon, Dragons: Rescue Riders features twins Dak and Leyla, who were raised by dragons. Since they were brought up among the winged creatures, the siblings can ride the mythical creatures as well as speak with them.

Using their special abilities, the twins and their flying friends embark on exciting adventures, working together to rescue other dragons.

The series premiered on Netflix in September 2019 and ran for two seasons plus one special. In November 2021, Peacock launched Dragons Rescue Riders: Heroes of the Sky, which continued the adventures of Dak and Leyla. The animated series concluded in September 2022 with its sixth season.

Dragons: The Nine Realms (2021-2023)

Dragons in the present day? That’s the premise of Dreamworks’ Dragons: The Nine Realms, which takes place 1,300 years after the events of the original film trilogy.

The series brings dragons into the modern world, following a group of teenagers led by Tom Kullersen, who discover a secret world of dragons living underground.

How to Train Your Dragon (2025)

Toothless and his dragon buddies come alive in a whole new way in the live-action remake of the 2010 original.

While DeBlois returns for the 2025 version, Mason Thames plays Hiccup and Nico Parker portrays Astrid, with Gerard Butler coming back to Berk as Stoick the Vast — the character he voiced in the original three movies.

At a preview event of the movie’s trailer, DeBlois called the live-action remake “a reimagining that holds quite faithful to the story and yet finds moments where we could enrich character relationships, give a bit of depth, give a little bit of mythology that might have been lacking in that original.”

Similarly, a live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon 2 is currently in the works, and is scheduled to soar into theaters on June 11, 2027.
